Having been owned by nine dogs and nine cats, the Lehmanns have had an excellent product testing department. Currently they have four cats and three dogs and almost always have a foster kitty or two or three who do the bulk of the company's research. The couple strongly promotes rescue and adoption of pets, and have worked with both the Humane Society of San Bernardino and the Redlands Animal Shelter by donating free food and discounts to new adopting pet parents. The Paws mascot, Pretty Boy Ffloyd, was adopted from Beagles and Buddies Rescue Group in El Monte, and served as the store's poster boy for adoption. His passing on June 21, 2007 brought great sadness to many, but the joy he brought to the Lehmanns, as well as so many of their customers, reinforces the wonderful benefits of rescuing abandoned animals.

Since the city's origins at the turn of the century, Redlands has had a strong interest in promoting the welfare of its animal citizens, from the horses who pulled the orange carts down State Street to deliver their harvested fruit, to today's companion animals.
